✨ A better way - you can use - to translate literacy with ChatGPT

The Problem

Think translating poetry is easy? Try getting an AI like ChatGPT to do it without making it cringe-worthy. We gave it a cheat sheet called Explanation-Assisted Poetry Machine Translation (EAPMT). Spoiler: it actually kinda worked.

But why is it difficult?

  • Complexity of Poetry: poetry involves capturing not just the literal meaning of words, but also the emotions, cultural context, style, and poetic essence (we may also expand this reasoning to song lyrics)

  • Traditional Methods: Previous methods often focused on maintaining rhyme and meter but struggled with the free-form nature of modern poetry.

  • ChatGPT’s Initial Performance: While ChatGPT has shown promise in various translation tasks, it still faces issues in poetry translation, such as failing to capture the poeticity and deeper meanings, leading to translations that can feel ✨ cringy ✨ or inaccurate.

The Solution (easy)

2️⃣ Steps Process:

  • Explanation Generation: ChatGPT generates an explanation for the poem. It includes both the literal content and deeper meanings.

For example, an explanation might describe how a mentioned "white crane" symbolises purity and stability, while the "rippling image" reflects the transient nature of life.

  • Guided Translation: Adding the explanation to a translation prompt, ChatGPT translates the poem into the target language, ensuring that the translation remains faithful to the original's essence.

For example, explanation helps translate "anchors to her liquid mirror" as "firmemente arraigada en su espejo líquido". Is better than the literal "de pie firmemente en su espejo líquido" that simply describes the physical action of standing firmly on a mirror.

It preserves the metaphorical meaning and poetic essence.

Conclusions

  • The Explanation-Assisted Poetry Machine Translation (EAPMT) improves translations of poetic texts by a significant factor

  • The findings highlight the potential for advanced AI models like ChatGPT to significantly contribute to the field of literary translation
